Updated 7/21/11: Results This past weekend, 16 men's teams competed in the 10th Annual Pete Schwab Memorial Tournament & 2012 ISC World Tournament Qualifier in Frankenmuth's Heritage Park. Heritage Park is situated along the Cass River, adjacent to the famous Bavarian Inn Lodge Resort and across the river from Herzog Hotel, the Frankenmuth Brewery, and downtown Frankenmuth. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall, riverboats carry passengers up and down the river alongside the park. Heritage Park is also home to over ten different annual festivals and events (seehttp://www.frankenmuth.org/festivals for details). However, during the 3rd weekend in July, the park is reserved for one of the best regional fastpitch tournaments in the Midwest. Between 14 and 18 teams have competed for the Pete Schwab Memorial tournament title for 10 years in a row, now. THANK YOU to all the loyal teams, players, umpires, families, and fans that participate or attend! We have enjoyed hosting you for these past ten years and look forward to continuing the event for years to come. This year's tournament crowned a new champion with Stock Pack (Ashland, OH) beating the 3-time defending champion Indians (Alvinston, ON) 6-2 in the A bracket finals. Powered by homeruns from Brad Webb and Chad Ferguson, Stock Pack was able to overcome an early 2-run deficit and claim the title. Sean Kelly earned the win on the mound and completed an outstanding weekend which included a perfect 4-0 pitching record (26 IP, 4R, 18H, 3BB, 49K). Taking the loss in the championship game was pitcher Ryan Swift, who also accounted for Alvinston's only runs with a 2-run home-run. Stock Pack reached the finals by beating Jack Daniels (Columbus, OH) in one semi-final. Meanwhile, Alvinston earned a 3-2 win in the other semi-final with Shawn Winship out-dueling Shaw Chiropractic's (Port Huron, MI) Dewey Dyck on the mound to advance. With the win, Stock Pack earns a berth to the 2012 ISC World Tournament to be held a 45-minute drive away next August in Midland, MI. In the B finals, Smalltown Fastpitch (Benton Harbor, MI) cruised past Tiffanys (Frankenmuth, MI) with a 12-0 victory, while the Gators (Goshen, IN) beat the Vols (Munger, MI) 14-7 in the C finals. Game details can be found below. A special thank you also to UIC Mike Clark and the umpiring crew for a great weekend. Tournament stats summaries will be posted on the Michigan Fastpitch website (www.michiganfp.com) over the next week. This website is an excellent source for information about the 37 men's fastpitch tournaments, the 15 fastpitch leagues and nearly 100 competitive men's fastpitch teams in the state of Michigan for 2011. In addition, (1) berth to the 2012 ISC World World Tournament will be offered to the highest finishing US East team. July 15 - 17, 2011 Pete Schwab Memorial Qualifier - Frankenmuth, MI Berth: 1-2012 World Tournament berth to highest finishing US East team. Format: 3 game round-robin with single-elim playoff Entry fee: $400 Contact: David Lach (lachdavid@gmail.com or 810-623-2276) UIC: Mike Clark (umpyclark@charter.net) ISC Rep: Lee Isenhart (isenhartlee_@hotmail.com) As in year's past, the tournament will be structured for 16 teams, 3-game round robin play. Starting Sunday morning, all teams will be seeded into one of three single elimination playoff brackets based upon their round robin results. The winners of all three playoff brackets will receive awards. During last year's tournament, the Alvinston Indians (Alvinston, ON) avenged an earlier loss in round-robin play to defeat the Lightning (Marshall, MI) 4-3 in a thrilling championship game. Alvinston beat Stockpack (Ashland, OH) 2-0 while the Lightning beat Mickey's Sleds (Midland, MI) 3-0 to advance to the finals. I have already been contacted by teams that are planning on attending this year's event, including (updated 3/21/11): 1. Alvinston Indians (Alvinston, ON) 2. Stockpack (Ashland, OH) 3. Shaw Chiropatric (Port Huron, MI) 4. Tiffany's (Frankenmuth, MI) 5. Up to Date Painting (Millington, MI) 6. Smalltown Fastpitch (St. Joseph, MI) 7. Duncan Outlaws (Elkhart, IN) 8. R/T Boring Drillers (Homer, MI) ***1 team currently on the waiting list One of the reasons that this tournament has been successful over the past ten years is the quality depth and competition of the teams that attend. Nine teams from last years tournament competed one month later in the 2010 ISC World Tournament. In addition, many of the blue crew that are integral to the Pete Schwab tournament are also veterans to the game's main stage. We look forward to seeing everyone later this summer in Frankenmuth!
