We are increasing our rates this year to better meet our expenses. The double elimination tournaments will be $300 and the round robin, 4 game guarantee, will be $350 per team. This is a $50 increase from the past 7 or 8 years since we last changed rates. We still are supplementing our tournaments with program advertising and game collection fees where we do raffles throughout the summer. Without these fundraising activities, break-even team entry fees would be $400 and $450.

This 2011 rate includes all of the amenities that you have come to expect from our waterfront location in Petoskey with scoreboard, scorekeeping, announcing, two new game balls for each game, individual awards for outstanding infielder, outfielder, pitcher and hitter, team plaque or trophy for top finishers, a minimum of two umpires for each game, field maintenance and field dressing between each game, concessions available throughout the weekend, restroom facilities, web-site game summaries and photos of 1^st and 2^nd place finishers to accommodate your local media coverage of your team. We also maintain our web-site that archives all games played since 2003 that is helpful in looking up results for future MASA Hall of Fame nominees and remembering the “good old days”.

Something that was started in 2010 and will be continued is a supplemental insurance coverage for players as a secondary coverage for existing insurance plans. In 2010, this was helpful for the shortstop of the Superior Vault 46ers when he was injured while playing and had to take an ambulance to the hospital with 3 days in Northern Michigan Regional Hospital. He had no personal health insurance. Our supplemental insurance program covered the expenses. With the high rates of unemployment and loss of benefits for many people in Michigan, we believe this is something that we need to continue.

We are working on securing a reduced rate and blocks of rooms once again with the Days Inn in Petoskey for our tournament weekends. Rates for 2011 are coming in at $75 to $79 which is 40% off the seasonal rates. We will have this information finalized on our web-site, http://www.masad21.org under the motel link by the end of the week.

Some of our regular teams that come up year after year are already contacting us to secure their spot. We will only be taking 8 teams in the double elimination tournaments so that all games can be played at the waterfront location.

In Charlevoix for the late July round robin tournament, we will likely cap this tournament at 10 teams where we have two fields and will use a 4 game guarantee. Once again in 2011, the Charlevoix tournament coincides with Charlevoix’s Venetian Festival with lots of fun, family-based activities in the area including carnival, fireworks Friday and Saturday night, live music entertainment in the park downtown throughout the week leading up to the tournament and more. We will schedule games to provide opportunities to participate in some of these evening activities like we did in 2010.

If your team is interested in playing, please contact us right away. These are invitational tournaments and we will decide who’s in and who’s on the waiting list. Decisions about who gets in will be determined by past participation, past success of the team and reliability of the team to sign up early, pay their entry fee and show up. In the past two years, we have cancelled tournaments because of lack of interest where teams bailed out at the last minute. We will do our best to discourage and prevent this from happening again. We appreciate your attention to these issues so that we can provide you the best experience possible from your interaction with D21 Softball.
